Expanding Horizons: Modernizing Music Education for Today´s Musicians

Leiðbeinendur eru: Rey Sánchez, Raina Murnak og Daniel Strange frá University of Miami Frost School of Music.

Viðfangsefnið er þróun tónlistarkennslu á háskólastigi í ljósi breyttra aðstæðna í nútímatónlistarumhverfi (t.d. aukinnar áherslu á tækni, breyttrar samsetningar nemendahópa og gjörbreyttra aðstæðna í tónlistargeiranum/iðnaðinum). Þá er sérstök áhersla á aðferðir sem tengjast reynslunámi (experiential learning).

During the week 19th-23rd of May, a course will be held at the Department of Music at the Iceland Academy of the Arts under the title:

Expanding Horizons: Modernizing Music Education for Today’s Musicians

The instructors are: Rey Sánchez, Raina Murnak and Daniel Strange from the University of Miami Frost School of Music.

The topic is the development of music education at the university level in light of the changing circumstances in the modern music environment (e.g. increased emphasis on technology, changing composition of student groups and completely changed circumstances in the music sector/industry). There is also a special emphasis on methods related to experiential learning.

The days are thematically linked so that everyone should find something to their liking. Lectures will be held in the mornings, while in the afternoons a variety of workshops are offered and participants are encouraged to bring their instruments if they wish.

Through the Open University of the Arts, we are happy to invite music teachers outside of IUA a seat in this unique course!

The course is intended for those who teach rhythmic and classical music.

Here is a unique opportunity to learn about the latest trends and developments in teaching methods from some of today’s leading experts.

Introduction
Higher music education is evolving rapidly in response to technology, changing student profiles, and the dynamic nature of the music industry. Educators are called upon to rethink traditional teaching methodologies and curricula to better prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. These workshops explore how higher music education can be reimagined through curricular innovation and experiential learning focused on the Three Pillars: Creativity, Diversity, and Integration. (The „Three Pillars“ concept comes from the Report of the CMS Task Force on the Undergraduate Music Major (TFUMM.))

Creativity at the Core
“One of the most startling shortcomings in all of arts education is that too many music students graduate with little to no experience in the essential creative processes of improvisation and composition.” (TFUMM)

A 21st century music curriculum should include ample opportunities for composition, arranging, improvisation, songwriting, production, creativity-based ensembles. These workshops will demonstrate how to create these opportunities by embedding them into already existing courses such as theory, skills, ensembles, lessons, and more

Diversity Embraced and Embedded
What does diversity sound like? Music schools admit students primarily based on their ability to sing or play an instrument in classical (or jazz) ensembles. We believe that the lack of diversity in music education is largely the result of the system itself. More specifically admissions processes that are strictly focused on filling traditional ensemble roles. These workshops will explore an alternative approach and the assessment criteria critical to embracing the wildly diverse landscape of contemporary music.

Integration Across the Curriculum
„In the conventional curricular model, performance studies are separated from theoretical studies, both of which are taught separately from historical and cultural inquiry. A fractured conception of music is thus promoted, as a collection of discrete “silos”…“ (TFUMM)

One of the key strategies for curricular innovation is the integration of Core Principles across the curriculum. Examples include:
● Integrated Musicianship Skills in a Creative Context
● Music History in a Multi-Cultural Context
● Performance/Communication/Audience Engagement Skills
● Teaching Skills: Facilitate Understanding
● Technology Skills: Notation, DAW, Live Performance, Video, etc.
● Entrepreneurship: Business Acumen, Career Development Transferable Skills
● Critical Thinking: Understand, Evaluate, Apply
These workshops will demonstrate how to incorporate these elements across the curriculum, offering students a more holistic music education.

Conclusion
These hands-on, experiential workshops will offer opportunities to not only learn, but to experience and apply new methodologies and practices in real-time. Topic areas will include assessing artistry, developing musicianship, learning music “backwards”, music industry/entrepreneurship, music technology, curriculum development and maintenance, creative ensembles, improvisation, songwriting, and more. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in an interactive performance clinic led by the workshop team.
